Group 1 SI 43 09 - Global Warming in Indonesia
Global Warming in Indonesia
According to the World Bank, since the early 2000s, Indonesia has experienced an average of more than 10,000 climate-related disasters every year, making it the most affected country by global warming and climate change in Southeast Asia. These disasters have caused significant damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and have displaced millions of people. The government and various organizations have implemented various measures to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change, but it remains a major challenge for the country. The effect of global warming in Indonesia is getting worse, this can be seen from the increases in daily temperature, which can threaten the ecosystem of biodiversity, triggers extreme weather change, increase forest fires intensity, and the rise of sea level.
Everybody knows that global warming increases daily temperatures, which can lead to water shortages and health problems. Water crises happen in many areas due to the increase in demand for water as temperatures rise. Additionally, higher temperatures can lead to health problems for many people, such as respiratory disorders, which are often linked to higher levels of pollution and poorer air quality. It was reported from the bbc.com site that the average temperature in Indonesia has increased by 1.5 degrees Celsius over the past 30 years due to the significant effects of global warming. This evidence is in line with the statement that global warming increases daily temperatures.
In my opinion, global warming threatens the ecosystem of biodiversity in many ways, including the degradation of coral reefs, as an example, namely the decline of coral reefs and reduced sea water quality in Raja Ampat at this time. According to research conducted by Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) 2017 in Bali, Raja Ampat's coral reefs have decreased by 35.15%, which can affect the abundance of fish and lead to changes in animal behavior that can lead to reproductive disorders, death, and population decline. Moreover, these impacts can have cascading effects on the entire ecosystem, leading to the loss of biodiversity and the decline of many species. This shows that Global warming threatens the ecosystem of biodiversity.
It is considered that global warming triggers extreme weather changes, leading to potential disasters such as droughts and storms. These events can cause significant damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and communities, leading to displacement and economic losses. Additionally, global warming can also lead to food crises due to uncertain weather conditions and disruptions in the food supply chain. For example, Cyclone Seroja In April 2021, Cyclone Seroja struck the Indonesian islands of Flores and Timor, causing widespread damage. The storm brought strong winds and heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods and landslides. Therefore, global warming is said to be the cause of extreme climate change.
I have no doubt that global warming causes the rise in sea levels, leading to tidal floods and saltwater intrusion. Tidal floods occur as seawater rises above the average due to global warming, leading to the flooding of low-lying areas and the displacement of communities. Moreover, saltwater intrusion can also damage the quality of groundwater and contaminate drinking water, impacting the availability of clean water for communities. It happened in Jakarta and many other coastal cities in Indonesia this past year. This supports the idea that global warming causes the rise in sea levels.
In conclusion, Indonesia is a country that is heavily impacted by climate change and global warming. The country experiences an average of more than 10,000 climate-related disasters every year, which have caused significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture and displaced millions of people. There are five reasons why global warming in Indonesia is getting worse. It has been affected by increases in daily temperatures, which can threaten the ecosystem's biodiversity, trigger extreme weather change, increase the intensity of forest fires, and cause the rise of sea levels. So, if we do not take serious action, this problem could be huge in the future. To address these challenges, we as citizens should also take action with our small steps. We hope the government and various organizations implement various measures to adapt to and mitigate the effects of global warming. Thus, global warming in Indonesia will not get worse.
